Steele happy with Brown hire, so is Peters

AUBURN | Jordyn Peters trusts Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

It’s why Peters, an Auburn defensive back commitment from Muscle Shoals, said he was happy with the Tigers hiring Greg Brown as the new defensive backs coach.

If Steele likes Brown, so does Peters.

“You can tell Coach Steele likes (Brown) a lot because he’s been talking about him and why he picked him,” Peters said.

Having since met with Brown, Peters understands why the veteran assistant coach was Steel’s choice.

“(Brown) reminds me a lot of Coach Steele,” Peters said. “Coach Brown is a great guy. He fits in with the program, fits in with me.”

Peters was in Auburn last weekend for an official visit, which offered him more opportunity and time to spend with Brown. Peters took advantage of it.

“We got to sit down and actually watch film and work a little bit more on technique and how he’s going to coach us and stuff,” Peters said. “I really liked it. He’s the real deal and he’s a cool guy.”

Two other defensive back commitments were in Auburn last weekend: safety Carlito Gonzalez and cornerback Traivon Leonard. Friendships between the three were formed during the two-night stay.

“We all three were together all weekend,” Peters said. “Me and Carlito are the most likely to room together, but we all three have been together all weekend. We ate together all day, just had a great time.”

The three commitments are scheduled to report to Auburn on May 28. Malcolm Askew, Auburn’s fourth defensive back in the class, enrolled early and is taking classes this spring. Gonzalez is projected to play safety; Askew and Leonard at cornerback and Peters at nickleback.

“You make a lot of plays (at nickleback),” Peters said. “That’s what I like doing: playmaking.”

Peters is considering a last-weekend visit to either Virginia or Miami, but is not wavering on his commitment to Auburn. He’ll sign with the Tigers on Signing Day.
