Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) Rivals150 power forward Horace Spencer saw all that he needed to see, heard all that he needed to hear, and now he's convinced. No doubts.
Auburn will be his next home.
Spencer, ranked the No. 62 player in the country, will sign a National Letter of Intent with Auburn on Wednesday, the first day of basketball's signing period.
"I'm excited to sign it, fax it and make it official," Spencer said. "I'm ready to get it done and be an Auburn Tiger."
Spencer, 6-foot-8 and 215 pounds, will sign during a ceremony in his hometown near Philadelphia, Pa. at 6 p.m. CT.
Spencer will be the sixth player in Auburn's 2015 recruiting class. The Tigers signed five in November's early signing period, including Rivals150 forward Danjel Purifoy, point guard New Williams, shooting guards T.J. Dunans and Bryce Brown and center Trayvon Reed.
"I can go there and make an impact. I can go there and make a difference," Spencer said. "I think we are going to be good next year. I think we can go (to the NCAA Tournament). I don't see why not. We have a really good recruiting class coming in and I think we can make Auburn special again in basketball."
Spencer had several opportunities to play elsewhere. He turned down scholarship offers from UNLV, Georgia, Iowa, Cincinnati, Maryland and Oregon State, among others, to accept the one from Auburn.
It wasn't a difficult decision for Spencer. He loves Bruce Pearl, Chuck Person, Harris Adler and Tony Jones, and what the staff is doing at Auburn. Spencer loves the opportunity to play, to be an immediate impact guy.
Most importantly, he loves Auburn. He knew it the first time he visited.
"I'm real comfortable there," Spencer said. "I feel like I'm at home. The people make me feel like I'm at home. My first visit, the people … it was incredible. Everyone was just so nice and polite."
Even at the convenience store.
"It was just outside of town and everyone spoke to me, said hello to me," Spencer recalled. "The hospitality and how people approached me, it was just incredible. They didn't know me, but they acted as if they did.
"It was just unique. I can't explain how nice people are down there. I knew then that Auburn is a special place and that I would love to call it home."
Spencer will get to call Auburn home soon. He plans to move to Auburn in May, no later than the 25th. He plans to begin making his impact immediately after.
"I can't wait to get down there," Spencer said. "I'm planning on coming in and working as hard as I can to be a starter, to make the biggest difference I can."
Spencer can make a difference in many different ways. In 30 games last season at Findlay Prep, Spencer averaged 10.8 points, 9.7 rebounds and nearly three blocks per game.
"I can rebound. I can block shots. I play hard defense. And I can score, too," he said. "I'm a high-energy player, a hard player. I play with everything I've got. I leave everything on the court when I play.
"Also, I try to have fun and enjoy myself when I'm playing the game. Auburn fans can expect to see a big ole' bright smile on my face on and off the court."
If they're anything like on his first visit, they'll be smiling back at him.
