Slide continues in Baton Rouge

A precipitous slide continued for No. 14 Auburn Saturday.

Auburn managed just two hits and Casey Mize had his worst outing of the season in a 9-1 loss to No. 11 LSU Saturday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium.

A seventh-straight loss drops Auburn to 32-21 overall and 14-13 in the SEC. Auburn has been swept in consecutive SEC series.

“All the way around we’ve got to get a little bit better and not feel sorry for yourself,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “There’s a bunch of people that don’t feel sorry for us. This team will have to step up with some urgency against Ole Miss at home next week.”

Mize (6-2) allowed a season-high five runs on six hits in 4.0 innings. LSU struck for three runs in the second inning on four hits, a squeeze bunt and sacrifice fly. Michael Papierski hit a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth, the first home run allowed by Mize this season.

The most runs Mize had previously allowed was four in 9.0 innings of a 5-4 win over South Carolina Mar. 31.

“The last two weeks I think you can just see that Keegan (Thompson) and Casey are not at 100 percent,” Thompson said. “You hope that they can both turn the corner and get it back.”

LSU starter Eric Walker (6-1) held Auburn without a hit through the first 7.2 innings before Sam Gillikin, starting for just the sixth time this season, hit a solo home run over the left field wall.

Dylan Ingram had Auburn’s other hit, a single in the ninth.

“Walker did a great job for them,” Thompson said. “When we get a pitch to hit, we’re just missing it. He took the sting out of our swing and it was very routine today.”

Auburn finishes the regular season next weekend with a three-game series against Ole Miss at Plainsman Park. First pitch Thursday night is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on SECN+ and WatchESPN.
