AUBURN | Auburn had several of the country's top prospects on campus Saturday to attend the Tigers' annual A-Day game, and among them was local four-star quarterback Jake Bentley.
Bentley, a junior at Opelika, is the son of Bobby Bentley, former head coach at Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C. and current offensive analyst for Auburn University.
Here is what the younger Bentley, who already has offers from Auburn, Miami, Southern Miss, Temple and Appalachian State, had to say about his visit to Auburn and the factor/non-factor his father will play in his recruitment.
Opelika, Ala. (Opelika)
On his visit…
"It was great. I got there and went to the quarterbacks meeting, and then me and (2017 quarterback prospect) Lowell Narcisse hung out with Coach (Rhett) Lashlee and got to see walk-throughs and then headed over to the game."
On the game…
"It was great. I could definitely see that they are going to air it out a little more. The offense is very dynamic in what they do. It was different seeing Jeremy Johnson. He's mobile, but he's not Nick Marshall-type mobile, and he played great. I liked seeing that because we have a lot in common as far as size and mobility. It was good seeing him and how he hit into the offense. Jeremy looked good, but so did Sean White and Tyler Queen. You could definitely see that they know what they're doing."
On Auburn…
"I'm definitely interested in Auburn. I like that it's right here at home. I love the campus. I love how hard they work in the weight room. They have good strength and conditioning coaches. And the offense, I definitely feel like it's a good fit for me. It's something that I'm used to. The up-tempo, fast-paced offense is definitely something that I'm comfortable with."
On his father's impact on his recruitment…
"I've had two older brothers that have gone through the recruiting process and both went to the schools they really enjoyed, not for the football side of it but because they loved the school, the academic side of it. That's how I'm going to pick my school. I'm going to really love the school, not just its football program or if my dad is there or not there, but because I love the school and everything about it. If my dad works there, that's a bonus."
On his recruitment…
"I'm taking it slowly right now. After the season I'll really start to focus on figuring it out, narrowing it down, but as of right now I'm keeping all of my options open.
"This summer I'll be visiting UCLA, Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, South Carolina, Duke, North Carolina, Miami and Texas, but right now I'm getting ready for spring. Practice starts next week and I'm really excited to get going."
