AUBURN | Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, Ala.) 2017 Rivals100 to Watch receiver Nico Collins doesn't mind surprises, not when they turn out like the one he received over the weekend in Auburn.
"Coach (Gus) Malzahn told me that he watched my film, really liked me and wanted to offer me a scholarship," Collins said. "It felt great. I wasn't expecting it. I was surprised, but it was a good surprise."
Collins' parents and sister all accompanied him on his two-day visit to Auburn.
"It was nice, and we had a lot of fun," Collins said. "We talked to the coaches. We talked to Coach (Rhett) Lashlee and Coach Gus Malzahn. My parents really liked them. I liked them, too. They seem like really good people."
Collins, 6-foot-5 and 193 pounds, now has offers from Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State and MTSU. He's also receiving interest from Florida State, Ole Miss, Louisville and Memphis, among others.
Three, however, stand out.
"Auburn stands towards the top for me," Collins said. "I like Auburn. It's a nice school. I like their coaching staff, the stadium, the academics…everything. I like it at Auburn.
"Auburn, Alabama and Georgia are my main three right now. I have offers from all three, but I'm going to wait to make a decision."
Collins plans to return to Auburn for the Tigers' spring game.
Collins had 39 receptions for 805 yards and 15 touchdowns as a sophomore catching balls from 2016 quarterback/athlete prospect Ty Pigrome.
