A new coach and a new target; Auburn got both in the hire of Lance Thompson.
Less than 24 hours into his new gig as the Tigers' linebackers coach, Thompson and Auburn extended an offer to Calvert Hall (Towson, Md.) four-star receiver and Miami commit Lawrence Cager.
Thompson previously recruited Cager, who is 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, to Alabama. The two developed a strong relationship, one that resulted in Cager knowing what to expect when he heard Thompson was leaving Alabama.
"I knew wherever he went, I was going to get an offer," Cager said. "The relationship we have is pretty strong so I knew he would offer me wherever he went."
Cager learned Wednesday of the Auburn offer.
"Coach Tompson called me and told me to call Coach (Gus) Malzahn and Coach (Dameyune) Craig," Cager said. "I called them and they both said they really want me at Auburn.
"Coach Craig said they get the ball to their receivers, and that they only want the best receivers for their offense."
The offer and conversations with the Auburn coaches were enough to put the Tigers into immediate consideration. Having Thompson on the Plains only helps.
"With Coach Thompson there, and I'm now really building good relationships with Coach Craig and Coach Malzahn, Auburn could be a good opportunity for me," Cager said.
Cager, ranked the No. 36 receiver, is now considering an official visit to Auburn.
"I might visit," he said. "They want me to come down for the weekend of the 30th. I'm going to talk to my parents about it."
Cager is scheduled to visit Alabama this weekend and Miami on Jan. 23-25. Right now, he said, both the Tigers and Tide have a lot of work to do to change his mind.
"I still feel good about Miami," Cager said. "I think Miami is making great strides, and I am still very committed to Miami."
