Malzahn agrees to stay

Gus Malzahn's job security was questionable after an October loss at LSU.

Five wins can change a lot.

The Auburn coach has given school officials his word that he will stay at Auburn for the foreseeable future, two sources told AuburnSports.com Sunday afternoon. Malzahn and the university are hammering out a restructured deal that includes a raise, stronger buyout protection, more money for assistants and iron-clad assurances about upgrades to football facilities.

It's unclear if a new deal has been signed, but Auburn is fully confident that Malzahn will not be coaching elsewhere next season.

Malzahn is wrapping up the second season of a five-year deal that pays him approximately $4.8 million annually. New Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher reportedly signed a deal worth approximately $7.5 million per season. Fisher's agent, Jimmy Sexton, also is representing Malzahn in his negotiation with Auburn.

UPDATE (8 p.m.): ESPN.com's Chris Low reports the deal is expected to go through the 2024 season with a total value of $49 million.
