NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Auburn's struggling offense has been dealt another crushing blow.
Tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, perhaps the team's most versatile offensive player, is out for the season because of a hip injury. The senior has been dealing with discomfort since two-a-days, but recently aggravated the problem to the point that he was held out against Vanderbilt.
Surgery has been scheduled for next week.
"I like Lutz a lot. He's a guy who has been by my side since the time I walked in here," offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler said. "I have a great respect for him. I feel bad for him."
Luzenkirchen finishes his senior season with 15 catches for 139 yards. The native of suburban Atlanta is expected to require two months of recovery time, which means he'll likely ready for the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine.
