AUBURN | The Gus Malzahn era at Auburn couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start with a SEC Championship and coming within seconds of winning the BCS Championship in his first season.

But after finishing 12-2 in 2013, it’s been a steady decline. Auburn finished a disappointing 8-5 in 2014, fell to 7-6 last season and has started 1-2 this year after a 29-16 loss to No. 17 Texas A&M Saturday.

When you dig a little deeper, the numbers get more concerning.

Malzahn is just 2-10 in last 12 SEC games with a 3-point win at Kentucky and a 26-10 win at Texas A&M in 2015 the only victories in a streak that stretches back to the midpoint of 2014.

He is a combined 0-4 against Auburn’s two biggest rivals, Georgia and Alabama, over the past two seasons, being outscored 138-77.

Auburn has now lost seven straight home games to Power 5 schools. According to ESPN that ranks second-worst in the country to Colorado, which has lost 10 straight.

Its last home win over a Power 5 school was 42-35 over South Carolina on Oct. 25, 2014.

Malzahn, however, didn’t want to take a broad-brush look at his four years at Auburn in his postgame interview.

“Each year is different and this is 2016,” Malzahn said. “The only thing on my mind right now is making us as good as we possibly can be. That’s the way I look at it.

“You turn the page from this one, you learn from it, you go practice, you give them a good plan and you worry about LSU – that’s the only thing on my mind and that’s how you look at it.”

Auburn will have a chance to pick up an SEC win and break the home losing streak to Power 5 schools next Saturday when No. 20 LSU visits Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“You’ve got to work hard, you’ve got to coach them up, you’ve got to give them a good plan and we’ve got to go out there and execute. We’ve got to improve,” Malzahn said. “The thing about this offense is that we will improve. We’re playing some young, inexperienced guys, but like I said, I feel like we had some opportunities tonight, we just didn’t’ get it done.

“That’s the only thing on my mind right now. We’ve got to find a way to fix that, obviously, playing a very good LSU team like you said. We’ve got to figure out a way to come out and play better on offense and play better as a team.”
