Johnnie Harris is out as Auburn women's basketball head coach.
Auburn athletic director John Cohen announced the move in a press release Thursday afternoon, one day after the Tigers' 2024-2025 season concluded with a first-round exit in the SEC tournament.
“After a thorough review of our women’s basketball program, I have made the difficult decision that a leadership change is in the best interest of Auburn University,” Cohen said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Johnnie (Harris). Having worked with her for more than a decade at two institutions, I know Johnnie is an exceptional person with a great basketball mind."
Harris spent four seasons on the Plains, taking over the program following the 2020-2021 season and leading the Tigers to a 58-63 overall record as head coach.
In her first season, Auburn went 10-18, winning just two SEC games — an upset over No. 4 Tennessee and an upset over No. 21 Georgia.
The Tigers improved in year two under Harris, finishing the year with a winning record for the first time in three years and earning a bid into the women's NIT.
Auburn then made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 in 2024, the third year under Harris, where the Tigers were an 11-seed and were eliminated in the First Four by Arizona. Other moments in that season included an upset win over No. 7 LSU and a win against Alabama.
However, the program took a step backward in the 2024-2025 season, as Auburn went 12-18 overall and just 3-13 in SEC play, finishing the year on a seven-game losing streak. Auburn lost to Florida in the first round of the SEC Tournament Wednesday, and Auburn announced the change in direction Thursday afternoon.
"I thank Johnnie for the way she represented Auburn and for her contributions to our women’s basketball program," Cohen said. "While these decisions are never easy, the program must move in a new direction.”
