High hopes for AU hoops

Eufaula (Ala.) point guard Tony Johnson had the opportunity to visit Auburn on Saturday and attend the Tigers' football game against Jacksonville State.
The sophomore didn't pass it up.
"I love going to Auburn," Johnson said. "It's a family feel for me there. I always get positive vibes from the coaches and the players so any chance I get, I go."
Johnson, 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, arrived early enough Saturday to play a pick-up game of hoops before heading to the football stadium for the 11 a.m. kickoff.
"I wanted to get there and play with some of the guys," Johnson said. "We played and I hung out with them for a little while and then we went to the football game."
The atmosphere in Jordan-Hare Stadium was one Johnson didn't expect, not with the opponent being Jacksonville State.
"But Jacksonville State played hard," Johnson said. "They made it a great game and made it a great atmosphere. I sat with some of the players and had a great time."
Johnson plans to return next weekend when Auburn hosts Mississippi State, and several more times when the basketball team starts its second season under Bruce Pearl.
Johnson is anxious to see how the Tigers do this year. His expectations are rising after being around and playing against most of the players.
"I think they are going to be really good," Johnson said. "They have players with experience, guys who transferred in and will be able to help. They have good depth, a great team and coaches and I think they will do really well."
Johnson has early offers from Auburn and Samford, and is receiving interest from Vanderbilt, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi State, UAB, Florida State and Troy, among others. Johnson plans to visit Georgia this weekend, and will be with friend and Auburn High junior Garrison Brooks.
"I'm also going to Tuscaloosa soon and I am trying to go to Mississippi State," Johnson said. "I'm keeping my options open because I'm not in a hurry to make a decision."
