PHENIX CITY, Ala. | First-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and secondary coach Travaris Robinson arrived at Auburn with a new blueprint for the Tigers' defense.
The high-energy duo are looking for cornerbacks that can match up in man coverage and that play physical against the run. They found just that in Phenix City (Ala.) Central's John Broussard, who committed to Auburn Thursday morning.
"He is absolutely that," Central head coach Jamey Dubose said. "Guys try to run at him in his highlight film, he has great tackles. He is physical. He gets his hands on people, and he is quick enough that he can run with guys. On top of that, he is a 6-foot kid that can cover those wideouts out there running around. He has long arms, and he has great reach. He is capable of playing man-coverage, he is capable of playing zone, but he is an all-around football player out there on the perimeter and he has the size and the things you need.
"I think the guy has everything you need to play corner in the SEC, and maybe even further than that according to how his career progresses."
Of course, as a coach, Dubose can certainly find areas that Broussard needs to continue to develop as he transitions to the next level.
"He is going to need to work on his man technique," he said. "Stuffing guys at the line of scrimmage with his hands. That's one area that I think would be best. No. 2, always defeating a block. Getting off a block.
"In high school football, he is kind of superior. Now, lets talk about the next level. He is going to have bigger, stronger guys like a Duke Williams at Auburn that he is going to have to get off that block to make tackles."
When it comes to pushing himself to improve off the field, whether it's the classroom, weight room or practice field, Dubose describes Broussard as a self-motivator.
"His father has taught him great work ethic," Dubose said. "His dad is a hard worker, and John sometimes helps with the family business family business at nights and then comes to work and practices the next morning. John doesn't complain, he just gets up and goes to work.
"I would say right now, he is probably one of the hardest worker in the weight room we have in our program. Sometimes you get guys that are really athletic and have a lot of attention - you push them. Before I got here, he had developed that own mentality of pushing himself."
