Auburn defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner helped bring together an effort that landed the Tigers the No. 8 class in the 2013 class.
And they did in essentially two months.
Garner talks about the instant chemistry of the new-look staff on the Plains, their passion for recruiting and why head coach Gus Malzahn deserves credit for assembling a cohesive and well-matched staff.
GARNER ON THE RECRUITING FINISH: I was excited. I think this staff did a great job of working together and selling Auburn. I don't think Auburn is a hard sell, even when they are going through tough times Auburn is special. If we get the chance to get a young man on campus, we've always got a chance because this is a special place.
GARNER ON THE JOY OF RECRUITING FOR HIS ALMA MATER: It's like not working. You get paid to do something you love. This is something I'm very passionate about. It's renewed life in me professionally and personally. My wife was here every weekend, my girls were here recruiting and they are now feeling the love and falling in love. It's an easy thing, when you believe in something and love something, it's not hard at all.
GARNER ON WHETHER HE WAS SURPRISED BY THE INSTANT CHEMISTRY WITHIN THE STAFF: I thought Coach Malzahn did a great job of assembling a staff that came in with great chemistry. The staff didn't take time to bond, that was instantaneous. We didn't have to clear that hurdle. We had to come in, identify who we were going to go after, guys we wanted a part of this program for the right reasons and I'm not going to say it was easy, but it was enjoyable to work the hours it took, grind it out like it took, I thought everyone here was passionate about getting Auburn back to the status where it belongs.
I think it spoke volumes to the thought process that Coach Malzhahn went through to plan out what he wanted to do. For him to put that together and bring it together with that chemistry and no egos and no hidden agendas, that's pretty awesome. Me being an alumnus, it's really awesome for me, this is my school. To have this staff representing my school, it gives me a higher sense of pride than it normally wold. I'm grateful to him for taking the time to process it out like that.
