HOOVER, Ala. | The son of one of Auburn's greatest running backs is competing in the Hoover National Select 7-on-7 in Hoover on Thursday and Friday.
Dutch Fork (S.C.) athlete Stephen Davis Jr., son of former Auburn tailback and NFL veteran Stephen Davis, is only a rising sophomore. But judging from his early offers, he's already making strides to be one of the best prospects in the Class of 2016.
Davis claims offers from Florida, Georgia, Clemson, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and of course, Auburn.
"I was shocked. I said, 'my dad's team just offered me?' It feels good," Davis Jr. said. "I was amazed, it feels great. My dad told me a little bit about them, I've thought about them, I'm not sure yet if I want to go there. He's going to keep talking to me about them and we'll see how it goes from there."
Auburn is recruiting the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Davis Jr. as a safety. He claims a 40-yard dash best of 4.5. Davis Jr. will play both safety and wide receiver this fall. He's playing linebacker during his two days in Hoover.
The elder Davis was a football and track standout at Spartanburg High School in South Carolina. Davis set a then South Carolina state record in the 100 meters with a time of 10.40. The record stood for 17 years, until it was broken in 2008.
In 1992, Davis was named the USA Today Offensive Player of the Year and was regarded by some as the nation's No. 1 recruit. He went to Auburn and earned All-SEC honors in 1994 and 1995.
Davis currently holds the record for rush attempts (1,945), rush yards (8,052) and rushing TDs (65) amongst all Auburn alumni in NFL history.
"He's a good help," Davis Jr. said. "My dad told me to stay humble and not let anything get to your head."
Davis Jr. said his father doesn't go on and on about his playing days on the Plains, but does remember fondly the exterior things that made his time at Auburn so enjoyable.
"He likes the 'War Eagle'," Davis Jr. said. "When the eagle flies around, the tree, but now they had to cut it down. He loved the tree. The fan base, he loves that, too."
Davis Jr. said he and his father last attended an Auburn game in 2010, when the Tigers and Cam Newton came from behind to beat South Carolina on their way to a SEC and National Championship.
