AUBURN, Ala. | Eufaula point guard Tony Johnson could be the state's top recruit in 2018.
Auburn certainly thinks so. Johnson is the only in-state sophomore with an Auburn offer.
The Tigers played host to Johnson and several other top recruits on Saturday, and got to see him in action against some of the best of 2017.
"We divided up into four teams of five and played full court," Johnson said. "It was fun. My team got some wins and there were some good recruits here."
Two stood out.
"I liked (2017 Rivals150 power forward) Chuma Okeke. He was real good," Johnson said. "And (Mountverde, Fla. sophomore) E.J. Montgomery was real good, too. He was impressive."
Johnson, who already is 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, met with Auburn coach Bruce Pearl and staff. Johnson already has developed a solid foundation with Pearl and his assistants.
It's a foundation that he thinks will last.
"Auburn was the first school to recruit me really hard, so they will always be in my top three," Johnson said. "I love Coach Bruce. He's a really nice guy and he's a winner. I know that he would put me in the best position to be successful and possibly go to the next level."
Johnson also is high on both Vanderbilt and Georgia. He has the offer from Auburn, and increased interest from the Commodores and Bulldogs, as well as UAB, Mississippi State, Florida State, Troy and Alabama.
Johnson is scheduled to visit UAB next weekend. He also plans to visit Vanderbilt and Georgia soon.
"I'm keeping my options open," Johnson said. "I'm not in a hurry (to make a commitment). I'll just do it whenever it feels right."
Johnson is returning to Auburn on Sunday, and his mother will join him on the visit. His uncle traveled with him on Saturday.
"I'll be back more in the fall," Johnson said. "I'll come back for some football games and basketball games."
