According to the rule, student-athletes may receive an additional year of eligibility in order to participate in four years of competition.
Under the NCAA rule, student-athletes are eligible for an additional year because of ''situations clearly supported by contemporaneous medical documentation, which states that a student-athlete is unable to participate in intercollegiate competition as a result of incapacitating physical or mental circumstances.''
Cobb, who suffered from blood clots due to Paget von Schrotter Syndrome, missed two seasons due to the condition, surgery and rehabilitation. Cobb transferred to Auburn in 2000 from Butler County Community College after spending the first two years of his college career at the University of Georgia.
Last season, Cobb completed 89-of-158 passes for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games. He led Auburn to a 23-20 win over top-ranked Florida on Oct. 13.
''I am pleased that I received the extra year of eligibility,'' Cobb said. ''I am looking forward to spring drills and learning the new offense under Coach Petrino.''
Auburn starts spring practice on March 1.
