Just give it to the freshman.

Isaac Okoro hit a layup over two defenders with 2.9 seconds left to give No. 22 Auburn a 70-69 win over South Alabama Tuesday night at the Mitchell Center.

Okoro led the Tigers with 15 points and added six rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Auburn’s highest-rated signee from the 2019 class now leads the team in scoring with a 14.3 average through the first three games -- all wins.

“We’ve got a guy that wears No. 23 for Auburn. His name is Isaac Okoro and he is a special competitor,” Auburn coach Bruce Pearl told the Auburn Network. “If you don’t think I’m going to stay up late every single night trying to find out how I can take full advantage of that young man, then you don’t know me very well.

“Isaac Okoro is not afraid and his attitude never changes and he’s certainly something to build around. I’m just so proud of him.”

Okoro’s baseline drive and dunk gave AU a 68-66 lead with 42 seconds remaining and broke a 10-0 Jaguar run.

USA jumped back on top 69-68 with an Andre Fox 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining. Samir Doughty pulled down two consecutive offensive rebounds off missed 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds, driving the baseline to find Okoro for the game-winner.

“Just a lot of effort on the rebounding part and Samir found me at the end of the game,” Okoro told the Auburn Network. “I didn’t know how much time was on the clock. I just had to get my defender up and go up for the shot.”

Auburn led by as many as 14 points midway through the second half, but committed four turnovers during USA’s late run and had a 4:21 scorning drought.

Three other players scored in double figures for AU including Jamal Johnson, who had career-high 14 points on 4 of 5 3-pointers. Anfernee McLemore had 14 points and four rebounds while Samir Doughty added 10 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Auburn (3-0) hosts California State Northridge (CSUN) Friday night at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
