Now he has it.
Johnson, an Auburn commit, was named the state's "Mr. Football" on Wednesday after a spectacular senior season. He finished with 2,297 total yards, 33 touchdowns and six interceptions to lead Madison Academy to a third consecutive state title.
His brother, Kerron Johnson, was named "Mr. Basketball" in 2009 and went on to become a star at Belmont University.
"I can compete now," Kerryon Johnson said with a laugh Wednesday afternoon. "He had state championship rings and a Mr. Basketball, but now I can get into that conversation."
Johnson edged out Dale County tailback Jamarius Henderson and Clay-Chalkville quarterback Ty Pigrome to earn the prestigious title. He is the first Huntsville-area player to win the award, which has gone to the state's top overall player every year since 1983.
The event is becoming a rite of passage for Auburn players, who have taken the honor for three consecutive seasons. Carver-Montgomery quarterback Jeremy Johnson won in 2012 and Oxford tailback Roc Thomas won in 2013.
Johnson said he was honored to be named "Mr. Football," but reminded the crowd gathered at the RSA Activity Center that he benefited from the efforts of many others.
"I think about all the great teams we had," Kerryon Johnson said. "It wasn't just me out there running around and doing my own thing. We had a great coaching staff that has led us for four straight (seasons). It's an accumulation of great things coming together."
