After five straight innings of having at least two men on base and only managing one run, something had to give, and it did in the eleventh inning.
Catcher Tony Caldwell stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eleventh, and with Auburn trailing 3-2, Caldwell delivered the game winning two RBI single into right center field scoring Justin Hargett and Justin Fradejas.
Auburn had come from two runs down to beat Georgia and take game one of a crucial home series.
"What a ballgame," Auburn coach John Pawlowski said. "Jon Luke did an outstanding job, Dillon Ortman did a great job. Our guys just kept battling and battling, and we get the game winning run in the eleventh.
"I thought our guys were energized, had a lot of life, and a good win for the guys tonight."
Auburn (24-21, 10-12) battled all night behind another outstanding performance form Jon Luke Jacobs on the mound. Jacobs threw seven and one-third innings, giving up seven hits, one run, and tying his career-high in strikeouts with nine.
A career high he set just a week ago in Columbia.
Georgia's Jonathan Hester hit a solo home run in the top of the eleventh, giving Georgia a 3-2 lead heading into the final half inning. Auburn quickly loaded the bases however, setting the stage for the dramatic hit by Caldwell.
"He threw me a curve ball, and left it up a little bit, and I got my hands extended and I was happy to come through in the clutch," Caldwell said. "I was watching Fradejas the whole way, just hoping he got in there."
Auburn had plenty of chances late in the game, including the ninth inning when pinch runner Bobby Andrews was thrown out at home trying to score the game winning run off a Casey McElroy two-out double.
It was the second Auburn runner that was thrown at home during the game.
A week after allowing South Carolina to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, freshman pitcher Dillon Ortman bounced back nicely. Ortman threw four innings in relief of Jacobs, only giving up the solo home run in the eleventh.
Auburn was led at the plate by Caldwell, who went 4-for-5, with two runs scored and two RBI.
Between Jacobs and Ortman on the night, the two combined to strikeout 14 Bulldog batters, while only allowing one walk in eleven innings of work.
Derek Varnadore gets the start for Auburn tomorrow, looking to bounce back from the worst outing of his career last week in Columbia as the Tigers attempt to win the series on Saturday at 3 pm central.
"It's great to see these guys out here working hard," Pawklowski said. "I told the team to come back and find a way tomorrow."
