New Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn met with the entire staff of assistant coaches on Wednesday afternoon and informed them they were released.
The entire staff was officially let go after the dismissal of Gene Chizik, though some continued to recruit, and were told they would be given a chance to be retained by the new head coach. The members of the staff that wish to remain at Auburn will be given an opportunity to interview with Malzahn and the new coordinators.
Malzahn has placed the emphasis on hiring new coordinators first, and then any assistants that wanted to stay, would interview with the new coordinators hired.
All assistants from the 2012 season, including Scot Loeffler, Brian VanGorder, Jay Boulware, Trooper Taylor, Willie Martinez, Tommy Thigpen, Curtis Luper, Mike Pelton and Jeff Grimes were in attendance during the meeting.
Taylor, Luper, Thigpen, Boulware and Grimes have been at Auburn for the last four years under Gene Chizik. VanGorder, Martinez and Loeffler just finished their first season on the Plains.
