AUBURN | Auburn has a proven winner as its head basketball coach. Not many, if any, would argue that of first-year coach Bruce Pearl. But Auburn also has one of the nation's top engineering schools, and for Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) 2016 Rivals150 power forward Chris Lewis, that's equally important.
In college, Lewis, 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds, wants to study engineering in the classroom and have an opportunity to play for championships on the court. He believes Auburn offers both.
"That's a big plus for Auburn," Lewis said. "I'm looking at several schools, but mainly ones with engineering."
Lewis got a closer look at Auburn on Saturday. The nation's No. 96-ranked junior prospect was back on the Plains for an unofficial visit. He previously visited Auburn in August for the Tigers' Elite Camp.
"I was injured during the camp so I just went and talked to the coaches. I didn't get to see a lot," Lewis said. "Saturday, I got to see them scrimmage and meet more with the coaches. Then I went to the football field for the (Auburn-South Carolina) football game.
"Everything went very well. I liked watching them scrimmage. I like their style of play, how they get up and down the court. And I liked that I got to talk more with the coaches."
Lewis spent time talking with assistant coach Tony Jones, his area recruiter. He also met with Pearl.
"They have a great coaching staff," Lewis said. "Coach Pearl is a great guy and a great coach. He would be a great coach to play for.
"I really like all of the coaches. They will get it turned around at Auburn. That's one reason I'm looking at them, and also because they have engineering."
Lewis plans to continue looking at Auburn, along with many other schools. He's not ready to name any favorites among a large group of offers. He plans to take his time with his recruitment, and that includes taking more visits.
"When I get another opportunity to visit Auburn, I'll be back," he said. "I'm going to try and visit a lot of schools. I am going to be patient with my recruitment.
"Before I make my decision, I am going to make sure that I am completely comfortable with it. Because once I make it, I don't want to change it."
It's the engineer in him.
