Bartram Trail (Jacksonville, Fla.) quarterback Joey Gatewood, projected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the 2018 class, has committed to Auburn.
The sophomore informed Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Rhett Lashlee on Saturday and later announced his decision on Twitter.
"Coach Malzahn and Coach Lashlee were very excited," Gatewood said. "I was, too."
Gatewood participated in the Rivals.com Five-Star Challenge in June. He was the only sophomore participant. Gatewood left the event ready to commit to Florida State, but he made a trip to Auburn on his way home.
It was the only visit he would need.
"I wanted to get a feel for what it was like," Gatewood said. "And I loved it. It just felt like home."
As a sophomore, Gatewood completed 59-of-103 passes for 713 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for 871 yards and six scores on 133 carries.
Gatewood chose Auburn over offers from Florida State, Florida, Clemson, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, UCLA, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Miami, South Carolina and Tennessee, among others.
"Auburn has the perfect offense for me," Gatewood said. "I love the coaches, the campus and everything about Auburn. I loved my visit and I can't wait to get back.
"I love it there. It's the perfect fit for me."
