Chris Rembert had two big hits and Jett Johnston got two key outs.
Rembert drove home four runs and Johnston got the final two outs in the ninth inning to give No. 25 Auburn’s an 8-7 win over No. 8 Oregon State Saturday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
“This was a grind but that’s what you’re going to get when you play an amazing, storied program like Oregon State,” AU coach Butch Thompson told the Auburn Network.
“Jett Johnston picked us up and Chris Rembert is a freshman and these guys are continuing to have big at-bats. We needed that home run. That was a big one when he hit it. And we held on.”
The Tigers improve to 10-1 on the season.
Auburn led 8-3 going into the eighth before a two-run home run by Gavin Turley cut the lead to three. The Beavers scored two more in the ninth before Johnston came in to strikeout Peterson and retire Turley on a deep fly ball to centerfield.
Johnston earned his first save of the season.
“I was just trying to do my job in there and get us a win,” Johnston told the Auburn Network. “Just an absolute gutsy performance from us overall. It was just awesome.”
Auburn scored its eight runs on just six hits. AU drew five walks and scored runs on a wild pitch in the third, a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth and a double-steal that allowed Cade Belyeu to score from third base in the sixth.
Rembert was 2 of 4 with a double, home runs and four RBI. The freshman drove in two with a ground-rule double in the second and two more on a two-run home run well over the left field wall in the fifth.
“He left a curve ball there and I just got my hands inside and stayed through it,” Rembert told the Auburn Network about his home run. “It’s awesome. It doesn’t get much better than this.”
Ike Irish was 2 of 4 with one RBI and Belyeu 0 of 3 with one RBI. Cooper McMurray scored two runs.
Defensively, AU turned three double plays and didn’t commit an error.
Cam Tilly (2-0) earned the win holding the Beavers to one run on one hit and one walk in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. He struck out four.
Carson Myers held OSU to just one hit in 2.0 innings with two strikeouts, Parker Carlson allowed two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings and Hayden Murphy two runs on two hits in 0.1 innings.
AU starter Cade Fisher, who is returning from a back/lat injury, allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in 1.2 innings.
