A two-out single by Wesley Helms plated Nick Hollifield as UAB secured a walk-off victory against No. 22 Auburn, 6-5, on Wednesday night at Regions Field in Birmingham, Ala.
The game didn't even without controversy, though. Hollifield seemed to miss home plate when scoring the winning run, but a review called him safe.
Eric Snow got Auburn off to a hot start, hitting the game's second pitch over the left-field wall to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Cooper McMurray followed three batters later with a solo shot to make it 2-0.
The Blazers answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs, the big hit coming off the bat of Todd Clay as he drove in two to give UAB a 3-2 lead.
McMurray struck again in the top of the 4th, homering down the right-field line to tie it up. UAB responded with a run on a fielder's choice to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning.
A one-out single by Deric Fabian got the Tigers rolling in the sixth. Chase Fralick followed with a single to put Fabian on second. He then scored on a Lucas Steele single to tie the game 4-4. Auburn had the bases loaded with two outs, but Ike Irish grounded out to second to end the threat.
Hollifield doubled to left-center and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Clay singled him in to give UAB a 5-4 lead.
In the top of the 8th, Fralick doubled down the right-field line with one out. Bristol Carter came in as a pinch-runner, advancing to third on an error by UAB's pitcher and scored on a double by Steele to make it 5-5.
Parker Carlson (1-1) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks with two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings. Ryan Olson (2-0) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless ninth.
Tigers' starter, Andreas Alvarez, allowed four earned runs on six hits and three walks while fanning three in 3 1/3 frames.
Auburn (11-2) returns to Plainsman Park on Friday as the Tigers host a three-game series against Old Dominion.
