Minor standout awaits major offers

Jaylond Adams doesn’t have any doubts, not when it comes to his football abilities.

Adams, a wide receiver/athlete from Minor High School in Adamsville, believes he not only can play in the SEC, but excel in it.

“I most definitely think I can,” Adams said. “I know I can.”

Adams’ stats certainly back up his claim. The senior has scored 50 career touchdowns at Minor. In eight games so far this season, Adams has scored 22 touchdowns, an average of nearly three touchdowns per game. He has 36 receptions for 914 yards and 13 scores, and has 31 carries for 366 yards and nine touchdowns.

Adams is elusive. He’s fast. He’s smart. He has the talent to play in the SEC, but doesn’t currently have an offer.

That could change soon.

Auburn wide receivers coach Kodi Burns has been in contact with Adams. Burns was on the sidelines Friday night to watch Minor beat Clay-Chalkville, 54-28. Adams didn’t disappoint.

Adams scored five touchdowns in the game, finishing with eight receptions for 265 yards (33.1 avg.) and three touchdowns, and rushing four times for 44 yards and two scores.

“I talked to Coach Burns after the game on Twitter and he told me I played a great game and that he’s really interested in me,” Adams said. “He didn’t mention an offer, but he said he loves what kind of player I am.”

Adams plans to speak more with Burns this weekend. Adams and Delonte Evans, who is a junior wide receiver at Minor, are set to attend the Auburn-Arkansas game on Saturday.

An offer from the Tigers “would be big” for Adams.

“Auburn is an SEC school, and growing up it was one of my favorite teams,” Adams said. “It would mean a lot to me. I really like Coach Burns. He’s a great coach. I watched him play and he was a great player. I think I could learn a lot playing under him. He’s a young guy, real laid back. I feel like he could teach me a lot.”

Oklahoma also has gotten into the mix for Adams. Sooners receivers coach Cale Gundy contacted Adams on Wednesday.

“He said they really loved my film,” Adams said.

Illinois, Indiana, UAB, Troy, Southern Miss, Western Kentucky, South Alabama, Jacksonville State, Samford, Arkansas State, Alabama State, among others, have offered Adams a scholarship. He’s also receiving interest from Minnesota.

“I’m not sitting around waiting on the offers,” Adams said. “I’m just playing hard every weekend and hoping they come in. It’s definitely something I want.”

Adams, who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 177 pounds, has an official visit set to Illinois for Nov. 4-6. Other visits would depend on which, if any, other offers arrive.
