COLUMBUS, Ga. | Auburn added to its Signing Day haul Wednesday with a commitment from 3-star linebacker/defensive lineman Caleb Johnson from Northside in Columbus, Ga.

Johnson chose the Tigers over Georgia and Florida. He also officially visited Tennessee.

"It’s relatively close to home and it felt like a family as soon as I got there," said Johnson of Auburn. "It felt like home and I just knew from there, the first time I was there, I knew that’s where I wanted to be."

Johnson, who grew up going to Auburn games, didn't think the Tigers would be an option in December. But Auburn turned up its recruiting in January and closed the deal during his official visit.

“Jordan-Hare is the place to be on a Saturday night. The fans are ecstatic when they win. It’s a beautiful place to be," Johnson said.

Johnson, who is 6-foot-3 and just turned 17 in October, played outside linebacker as a senior but expects to play the defensive line at Auburn. He weighed in at 267 pounds during his Auburn visit Jan. 26, 22 pounds more than his listed playing weight in high school.

"That’s what really attracted me to Auburn is that Coach (Rodney) Garner does rotate his players a lot and it’s an opportunity for me to get a lot of playing time as a freshman," Johnson said,

Johnson had 104 tackles, 12.0 tackles-for-loss, 8.0 sacks, four pass breakups, four fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and two blocked punts as a senior. He returned three of those fumbles for touchdowns.

As a tight end on offense, he caught eight passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Johnson is Auburn’s 24th commitment/signee in the 2018 class. He’s ranked by Rivals as the nation’s No. 45 outside linebacker.
