AUBURN | Rivalries are a key component of Bruce Pearl’s plan for rebuilding Auburn’s basketball program. That’s why he renewed the Tigers’ series against UAB last season after a 15-year layoff and why he’s going to Birmingham this Saturday for a rematch.

“I’m very excited about playing in this series against UAB,” Pearl said. “I think our fans appreciate it, from both schools. It’s a renewal of a rivalry, that the game should be played.

“Obviously, I get a lot of questions as to, you know, we have a lot to lose and not as much to gain. I just disagree with that in the sense that UAB’s basketball program, their men’s program, had been ahead of our program for many years. And I recognize that.”

UAB has made 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament including five since Auburn’s last trip in 2003. This year’s Blazer team returns four starters from last season and was picked to finish first in Conference USA for a third-straight year.

UAB is led by junior forward Chris Cokley, who is averaging 13.7 points and 5.4 rebounds. Junior forward William Lee averages 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game giving the Blazers a big and physical frontcourt.

“Rebounding will definitely be a factor. UAB is going to hit us in the mouth. They play hard. They play physically,” Pearl said.

Auburn beat UAB 75-74 last season on a late 3-pointer by TJ Lang, which Pearl called one of the Tigers best wins. The two in-state rivals will square off again at Bartow Arena Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT on beIN Sports.

“Creating interest statewide is important,” Pearl said. “I think the quality of basketball in the state is getting better -- I think the coaches and the recruiting and the interest. It does bring attention to it.

"Part of the reason I was willing to play in this series was to be able to get our team up to Birmingham. We've got great, great fan support in Birmingham and we're going to have a good crowd up at Birmingham.”
