Matt Hall and Justin Hargett both hit the first home runs of their respective Auburn careers during a five-run second inning that propelled the Auburn baseball team to a 10-4 win over Mercer on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park.

Freshman Trent Mummey was the sparkplug for the Auburn offense from the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5 with a triple and four runs scored as Auburn improved to 15-9.

"Earlier today in batting practice I made some changes in my stride and it seemed to work out; I was getting my foot down earlier and everything seemed to click today," Mummey said.

Trailing 2-1 heading to the bottom of the second, Joseph Sanders (2-for-4, BB, 2 R) and Kevin Patterson (1-for-4, BB, R) led off with back-to-back singles. After a Brian Fletcher (1-for-3, 2B, R) flyout and a Ryan Jenkins (0-for-4) RBI groundout tied the game, Hall blasted a 1-1 fastball over the wall in left for his sixth extra-base hit in the last eight games to give Auburn a 4-2 lead.

"I was looking for a fastball and he tried to throw me one in. It was a little high and I saw it well, I threw my hands at it and good things happened for me," Hall said.

Mummey followed Hall's blast with a triple and then Hargett (2-for-3, BB, 3 RBI) lined a shot over the wall in left to put Auburn up 6-2.

Auburn added single runs in the sixth and seventh and then two more in the eighth to capture its fourth win in its last five games.

Taylor Thompson earned the win for Auburn, entering in the second inning and throwing 5.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits to move to 2-2 on the year.

Michael Hurst and Evan Crawford threw the final three innings, allowing two hits and one walk combined.

Mercer (9-14) starter David Harden took the loss, allowing six runs in 2.2 innings to fall to 2-1 on the year.

Hall, who closed the night with a double in the eighth, has been on a tear over the last eight games, hitting .387 (12-for-31) with five doubles, a triple, a home run and four runs scored to raise his batting average from .214 before the streak started to its current mark of .276.

Hunter Morris went hitless on the night, going 0-for-5 and snapping his hitting streak at 10 games.

Auburn returns to action on Wednesday night at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., for a 6 p.m. contest with Samford. Cory Luckie (3-2) gets the call for Auburn while Samford will counter with Michael Jarry (0-2).
