Auburn has three players committed who could project to play running back on the Plains, and the trio proved they're worthy in last week's games.

Alaric Williams returned to action after being sidelined for a month with a torn meniscus to rush for 103 yards and three touchdowns. Octavius Matthews rushed for a season-high 88 yards and two scores, and Devan Barrett had a career-game. Barrett, from Tampa, Fla., rushed for 257 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 78 yards and a score.

It was a good week for the running backs.

Auburn’s quarterback commitment Tray Bishop didn’t need to throw the ball. He rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown. Malcolm Askew, although he projects at cornerback, amassed 225 yards and three touchdowns on offense.

Defensively, Tadarian Moultry continued his impressive season, totaling 11 tackles. Safety Carlito Gonzalez had his second interception of the year, and Jordyn Peters had a pair of tackles in one quarter.

Game: Southside lost to Oxford, 24-21

Note: Williams returned from a torn meniscus to rush for 103 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

Season totals: In three games, Williams rushed for 431 yards and seven touchdowns on 47 carries (9.2 avg.). He also has two receptions for 54 yards and a score.

Game: Tampa Catholic beat Berkeley Prep, 25-10

Stats: Barrett rushed for 257 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries (10.7 avg.), and had three receptions for 78 yards (26.0 avg.) and a score.

Season totals: Barrett has 65 carries for 525 yards (8.1 avg.) and three touchdowns, and seven receptions for 97 yards and a score.

Next: Tampa Catholic (2-2) at Land O’ Lakes, Oct. 7

Game: Itawamba beat Pearl River, 51-34

Stats: Matthews had 18 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Season totals: Matthews has rushed for 297 yards on 51 carries (5.8 avg.) and three touchdowns, and caught seven passes for 134 yards and a score.

Next: Itawamba (3-2) at Northeast, Oct. 6

Game: Terrell County beat Baconton Charter, 40-16

Stats: Bishop rushed for 140 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run, on six carries in one half of play. Bishop did not attempt a pass.

Season totals: Bishop has rushed 49 times for 690 yards (14.1 avg.) and five touchdowns, and completed 36-of-51 passes (70.6%) for 402 yards and four touchdowns. He also has two interceptions on defense.

Next: Terrell County (3-3) at Stewart County, Oct. 7

Game: McAdory beat Brookwood, 54-15

Stats: Askew completed 5-of-7 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 98 yards and two scores on just three carries.

Season totals: Askew has completed 42-of-89 passes for 806 yards and eight touchdowns, and rushed for 439 yards and three scores. He also has one interception on defense.

Next: McAdory (3-3) vs. Bessemer City, Oct. 7

Game: Jackson-Olin lost to Ramsey, 45-27

Stats: Moultry recorded 11 tackles, including eight solos and a tackle-for-loss.

Season totals: Moultry has 73 tackles, including 34 solos, eight tackles-for-loss, 14 quarterback-pressures, one pass break-up, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

Next: Jackson-Olin (4-2) at Shades Valley, Oct. 7

Game: Stephenson blanked Jonesboro, 27-0

Stats: Gonzalez had four tackles, all of which were solos, and his second interception of the season.

Season totals: Gonzalez has 33 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, two interceptions, two pass break-ups, forced a fumble and returned a fumble 73 yards for a touchdown.

Next: Stephenson (3-3) at Martin Luther King, Oct. 13

Game: Muscle Shoals routed Columbia, 54-7

Stats: Peters played only the first quarter in the blowout win and recorded two tackles.

Season totals: Peters has 40 tackles (25 solos), four pass break-ups and two blocked punts.

Next: Muscle Shoals (3-3) vs. Hazel Green, Oct. 6

Game: Classical Academy lost to La Junta, 24-21

Stats: Carlson punted five times for a 35.2-yard average and was 3-of-3 on extra point attempts.

Season totals: Carlson is 23-of-23 on extra-point attempts and 5-of-12 on field goal attempts (long of 51 yards). He also has kicked 33-of-35 kickoffs for touchbacks and punted 11 times for an average of 36.7 yards.
