Auburn takes series win over Clemson

The seventh-ranked Auburn baseball team scored seven unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings en route to a 9-6 win over No. 25 Clemson, for the series win at Doug Kingsmore Stadium Sunday. Auburn improved to 16-2 on the year while Clemson dropped to 6-7 after losing its first non-conference series at home since 1999.

Clemson scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead before Auburn scored twice in the third and five times in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.
Auburn evened the game in the third with a sacrifice fly RBI from Ben Sprague scoring Mike Hnytka and a run scoring single by Tug Hulett plating Clete Thomas.
Ten batters came to the plate in the Auburn five-run fourth inning, including five consecutive batters that reached safely. Josh Sullivan led off the inning with a single and after a Derek Sain sacrifice, Hnytka walked setting up Thomas' RBI double plating Sullivan with the go-ahead run.
Sprague gave the Tigers its second consecutive double and a three-run lead with a two-base hit to right field scoring two runs. Hulett followed with a walk before Josh Bell singled to right scoring Sprague. Hulett scored the final run of the inning on a throwing error by Clemson third baseman Brad McCann.
The two teams traded runs before Clemson scored three in the sixth, cutting the Auburn lead to 8-6. Herman Demmink doubled and scored in the inning and Evans added an RBI double.
It was as close as the Clemson would get as Auburn's Bell and Steven Register combined to retire 11 of the final 12 Tiger batters to end the game.
Sain added an insurance run for Auburn in the ninth inning with a two-out single to left scoring Chuck Jeroloman.
Bell (1-0) recorded his first collegiate victory, giving up two unearned runs in three innings of relief. Register picked up his second consecutive save and fifth of the season, tossing a perfect ninth inning.
Auburn starter Mike Felix struck out a career-high seven batters while giving up three runs (two earned) in 4 2/3 innings of work. Felix retired eight consecutive batters at one point.
Starter Tony Sipp (0-1) gave up seven runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings in a loss for Clemson.
Auburn will play Troy State on Wednesday, March 17 at 6:00 p.m. CT at Patterson Field in Montgomery.
