AUBURN | Kyle Davis was limited in spring coming off shoulder surgery. A foot injury this summer kept him out of the first three weeks of fall camp.
Not surprisingly, Auburn is being cautious as the freshman wide receiver returns to practice.
“Kyle is doing really well. He looks healthy,” offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said. “We've had to be real smart. Coach (Kodi) Burns is doing a good job easing him in rep-wise because conditioning, that's probably where he has the biggest gap, the conditioning level of running actual football plays and routes.
“(Head athletics trainer) Robbie (Stewart) has done a good job with his staff, of getting him ready. We're just trying to make sure we don't push him too fast from a conditioning standpoint but he's done some really good things.”
Davis is one of four talented wideouts Auburn signed in the 2016 class. At least three are expected to play this fall including Davis, but his contributions may be limited the first month of the season including Saturday’s opener against No. 2 Clemson.
“You're talking about a guy that didn't get to do very much in the spring and then missed the first two and a half, three weeks of camp. We're talking about a guy who is going to have two full weeks of practice under his belt,” Lashlee said. “We'll just have to see where he's at this week as far as the load he can carry mentally. He's done a good job mentally and physically, been pleased with that. We've just got to make sure we're fair to him and what we ask him to do.”
When the 6-foot-2, 219-pound Davis does fully return he’ll give the Tigers a potential big-play option who scored 18 touchdowns for Archer High School in Loganville, Ga., and was named MVP of last summer’s Opening camp.
“He's a real aggressive player. He's strong. He's a guy that attacks the ball and that is something we need,” senior wide receiver Marcus Davis said. “In just that little time out there, he showed those flashes of that. He's a real good blocker and wants to do those type of things so as the season goes on, he's somebody you're going to see out there.”
