No. 1 Auburn had no answer for Texas A&M on the boards.

The 22nd-ranked Aggies scored 29 second-chance points on 24 offensive rebounds in an 83-72 win Tuesday night at Reed Arena.

“We just got physically punched in the mouth. We just got physically run out of here,” AU coach Bruce Pearl told the Auburn Network. “It’s how Texas A&M plays. When you get 16 defensive rebounds and they get 24 offensive rebounds, that’s going to be a deal.

“Every team is going to look at that and go, ‘Hey, the way to beat Auburn is just be physical with them.’ And we just didn’t step up. It was everybody.”

Texas A&M, which beat a top-ranked team for the first time in program history, finished with a 41-25 rebounding advantage.

The Tigers fall to 27-3 overall and 15-2 in the SEC.

TAMU, which came into the game ranked last in the SEC averaging .308 from 3-point range, made 9 of 25 from beyond the arc. The Aggies added 18 points off 13 AU turnovers.

AU was without its starting point guard and top perimeter defender, Denver Jones, who suffered a bruised foot at Kentucky Saturday.

TAMU made 6 of 15 3-pointers in the first half to lead 40-34 at the break, and led by double-digits for most of the second half.

Tahaad Pettiford led AU with 19 points. Chad Baker-Mazara added 15 and Miles Kelly 12. Johni Broome struggled for a second consecutive game finishing with eight points and seven rebounds.

Auburn will close out the regular season against No. 7 Alabama Saturday afternoon at Neville Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. had
