Point guard Wendell Green Jr. said last week that he was considering his options for the 2023-24 season.

He made his choice Sunday.

The Eastern Kentucky transfer announced on Twitter that he plans to forgo his senior season and instead pursue professional opportunities. He averaged 13.7 points per game last season, 12 points per game during the 2021-22 season as a full-time starter.

Green served a vital role during his two seasons with the Tigers. He took over primary ball-handling duties after Sharife Cooper's departure for the NBA — and quickly endeared himself to fans with his remarkable enthusiasm. He spent most of his sophomore season as a traditional distributor who was best known for taking deep threes. Green pivoted into an aggressive driver during his junior season, which turned him into a free-throw generator of sorts.

He led the Southeastern Conference with 190 free throws attempted last season. That was a good thing for Auburn; Green hit 84 percent from the line both seasons at Auburn.

Still, Green had his struggles. His long-range shooting tailed off last season (29.5 percent) and he was perhaps too willing to attempt difficult shots during the final stages of close games.

Green's departure is interesting in the context of Auburn's effort to rebuild its roster ahead of the 2023-24 season. Rising sophomore Tre Donaldson proved himself to be a competent backup and hit some important three-point shots during the NCAA Tournament. Aden Holloway, a McDonald's All-American point guard, signed with Auburn and will be a freshman next year. A positional logjam has been eased.

Even before Green's announcement, however, coach Bruce Pearl was visiting with guards from the transfer portal in a quest for more shooters. That group included Rice guard Quincy Olivari and Temple guard Damian Dunn — both of whom spent time at point guard last season.
