AUBURN |
Woodward Academy (College Park, Ga.) Rivals250 running back Elijah Holyfield had never been to a college practice. Not at an FBS school. Not until Thursday.
Holyfield, ranked the no. 5 running back in the country, visited Auburn and watched as the Tigers practiced for the seventh time of the spring.
"It went great," Holyfied said. "I had never seen a practice at this level before so it was cool to see. I had a really good time."
Holyfield, 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, kept his attention focused on the running backs as well as running backs coach Tim Horton.
"I got a chance to see the running backs, see how they work and see how Coach Horton coaches," Holyfield said. "I wanted to see the running backs, compare myself to them a little bit. I liked Roc Thomas. I like the way he runs. He reminds me a little bit of myself."
Holyfield also liked what he saw from Horton.
"I really liked how Coach Horton coaches," Holyfield said. "He's a laid-back guy, but he coaches you hard. That's the type of coach I like. I don't like too much yelling or cussing so he's my type of guy."
Horton is one of many reasons why Holyfield is high on Auburn. The Tigers currently are vying for a spot in his top five, which he plans to release at the end of the spring.
But Holyfield, who was joined on the visit by his stepfather, ended any suspense before it began. At least for Auburn fans.
"I'm pretty sure Auburn will be in there," he said. "You get the chance to play at the highest level. They run the ball and their history of running backs is great. It's one of the schools that I think gives me the best chance to get to the next level.
"I like Auburn. You can count them in (my top five)."
Holyfield plans to announce his commitment either before the start of his senior season or soon after. He will visit South Carolina on Friday and hopes to return to Auburn on April 18 for A-Day.
Rivals.com ranks Holyfield the No. 113 overall prospect in the country and No. 13 player in the state of Georgia.
