AUBURN | Tray Bishop’s visit to Auburn on Saturday was a little different than his first. The quarterback/athlete from Terrell County (Ga.) wasn’t on campus to participate in camp as he did on his initial visit in June.

Bishop was in Auburn on Saturday to be recruited, not coached.

“The first time I went to Auburn I never thought that one day I’d be getting recruited to compete at quarterback,” Bishop said.

But he is.

“It’s great,” Bishop said “I love it.”

Bishop, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 190 pounds, was in Auburn for the Tigers’ first big Junior Day for the 2017 class. He met with several coaches, including Gus Malzahn, area recruiter Scott Fountain and position coach Rhett Lashlee.

“It went great,” Bishop said. “I had a great time, but I always do at Auburn. I talked a lot with Coach Fountain. He’s a great guy and is recruiting me hard. I also spent a lot of time with Coach Lashlee and Coach Malzahn.”

Bishop has developed good relationships with the coaches. The staff is one of several reasons Bishop, who has an Auburn offer, is high on the Tigers.

“I like Coach Lashlee. He knows what he’s talking about,” Bishop said. “And he’s the quarterbacks coach, so that’s good for me, too. Him and Coach Malzahn say the quarterback position is wide open and that’s music to my ears.”

The opportunity to play quarterback has Auburn at the top of Bishop’s list of favorites. The Tigers lead two other SEC schools.

“Auburn is my leader, and then it’s Georgia and Ole Miss,” Bishop said. “I really like it at Auburn. I’ve been there more and I’ve seen everything. I’ve built close relationships with the coaches. Most of all, it’s a great atmosphere and there are great people there.”

Bishop, who is ranked the No. 29 player in Georgia, doesn’t plan to make an early commitment. Auburn leads, but he still plans to wait before announcing a decision.

“Not anytime soon,” Bishop said. “It’ll probably be after the season.”
