AU 'in the mix' for Louisiana OT

East Ascension (Gonzales, La.) offensive tackle Cameron Wire hasn’t forgotten his first and only visit to Auburn, thanks in large part to offensive line coach Herb Hand.

It’s one of the reasons Wire, one of Louisiana’s top recruits, plans to return to Auburn this summer for a second visit.

“(Hand) made a big impression on me when I went to camp there as a sophomore,” Wire said. “He’s a very good offensive line coach. He showed me things that I had never learned about, and he made me a better player.”

Hand, the Tigers’ second-year o-line coach, has been recruiting Wire since the camp. The coach stopped by East Ascension this week to further evaluate the player.

“Coach Hand came to watch me (Tuesday),” Wire said. “I was glad to see him. I really like Coach Hand. He’s a good person and a great coach.”

Wire plans to visit Hand in Auburn again soon.

“I really liked Auburn when I went to camp,” Wire said. “I’ll go back this summer, but I don’t know when, yet.”

Auburn is one of several schools Wire is considering. He visited Texas, LSU and Mississippi State in the spring and hopes to visit others, including Auburn, before the fall.

“I don’t have a top group of schools, but I’m working on it,” Wire said. “But Auburn is definitely in the mix. I like Coach Hand, all of the coaches, the people at Auburn, the facilities, the drills they run and how they make the players better.”

Rivals ranks Wire, who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 265 pounds, the No. 28 player in Louisiana in the 2018 class. He doesn’t plan to announce his commitment anytime soon.

“I’m not in any hurry,” Wire said.
