AUBURN | Auburn quarterback commitment Joey Gatewood visited Auburn for the final time of the summer, and the four-star recruit made it count.

Gatewood, who is from Bartram Trail in Jacksonville, Fla., arrived in Auburn on Sunday and stayed until Tuesday.

“It was great, awesome,” Gatewood said. “It was great to be back home again, great to hang out with some of the players and also talk a lot with the coaches.”

Gatewood met with Gus Malzahn, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and spent time with several newcomers, including transfer quarterback Jarrett Stidham and freshmen Big Cat Bryant and Devan Barrett.

“I was with Coach Lindsey a lot, Coach Malzahn a lot,” Gatewood said. “Coach Lindsey is an awesome dude. I can’t wait until I get there. I think he has a great game plan for us. And me and Jarrett sat down and watched a lot of film together. Jarrett is a cool dude, a real cool dude. I had a real good time with him.”

Gatewood will return to Auburn in the fall for an official visit, most likely the weekend of Sept. 29 when the Tigers host Mississippi State. Gatewood will sign with the Tigers in December and enroll in January. He has little doubt about that.

“I’ve been talking to and recruiting (five-star receiver) Justyn Ross, (four-star running back) Asa Martin and (four-star lineman) Tank Jenkins,” Gatewood said.

Gatewood is aware of Auburn’s plans to sign two quarterbacks in the 2018 class. He has been aware since the spring.

“Coach Lindsey told me that,” Gatewood said. “It doesn’t bother me. You’re going to have competition wherever you go.”

Gatewood, who is 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds, is ranked by Rivals as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the 2018 class and No. 123 in the Rivals250.
