AUBURN | Fall camp officially closed this weekend with Auburn wrapping up the first three weeks of preseason practice with a scrimmage in Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday and a workout in shorts and helmets Sunday.

With classes starting Monday, the players will get a day off before returning to the practice fields Tuesday.

“We’ll get in our game week routine and we’ll do that for two weeks,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. “I think that will be good. It has been a long three weeks, but a good, productive three weeks. I think our kids have handled it very well.

“We’ve been fortunate as far as any major injuries and we’ve been very physical. That’s a very good thing getting ready for school to start. Once you start game planning and getting very specific that’s when school starts, so I think our players and our coaches are both looking forward to that starting.”

Malzahn said a number of banged up veterans including defensive linemen Marlon Davidson and Andrew Williams, and defensive backs Daniel Thomas and Tray Matthews will be healthy for the start of the season.

“As a matter of fact, all of them were back in some capacity -- that's out there doing something,” he said. “Everyone of those guys we expect to be ready for game one. Anytime you go through fall camp and it's physical, you're going to have some nicks and stuff like that. But I'll tell you what it does, it also helps you develop depth.

“It gives some guys that may be with the twos get a chance to see how they respond with the ones. Those guys that you just talked about, all of them have game experience so our coaches know a lot about what they're going to get. I think that will be a blessing as far as moving forward in a season and get that experience. There's nothing like being out there with the first group and seeing how they respond.”

Malzahn didn’t offer a lot of details on the scrimmage but said much of the focus was on special teams and game management.

“It was a lot of ones on ones with our special teams,” he said. “We did kickoff, kickoff return, punt, punt return. We did some more live field goal situations, which I think is always good. We did a couple of two-minute situations, good on good, which is always good not just for players but for coaches in the different situations that come down to the end of the game. We also did before the scrimmage started did third down emphasis good on good.

“Once we put the ball down there were some ones that went, all the twos went, all the threes went. It's kind of that final scrimmage to show some of those guys on the border right there are they ready to take the next step to help our team, or do they need a little more time. It was a really good day for that. At the very end we divided up offense and defense and just did some special situations you know, as far as the games, the procedures, on and off the field, the communication on the sideline and everything that goes with that.”

No. 13 Auburn opens the 2017 season at home against Georgia Southern Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
