AUBURN | Clint Myers said Thursday he'd love to have his son, former associate head coach Corey Myers, back with him in the dugout at Jane B. Moore Field.

Will that happen? The head coach seems skeptical.

Corey Myers resigned suddenly last Thursday just as Auburn was preparing to leave for a crucial, three-game series at Georgia. A release provided by the university said Corey Myers resigned to devote more time with his family, though some observers are skeptical and believe the resignation was the result of internal controversy.

Clint Myers stood by his son's statement Thursday, but stopped short of saying he has a standing offer to return.

"I’d take him back in a heartbeat. There’s a point in time when that would be? I have no idea," Clint Myers said. "When have you known me to speak for the school or the administration? You ask me? He’s my son and I loved working with him and I hope, in the future, to be able to work with him again."

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs didn't immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the situation.

With Corey Myers out, Auburn's coaching staff has been reshuffled a bit. Hunter Veach, who began the season as a graduate assistant, has been promoted to emergency fourth coach and is working alongside Clint Myers, Casey Myers and Scott Woodard. Veach worked closely with Corey Myers during the past 18 months and now is calling pitches, Corey Myers' old job, with oversight from the head coach.

Auburn managed well without Corey Myers last weekend by sweeping the series at Georgia for the first time in history. So all is not lost in the short term.

Still, Corey Myers was seen as the heir apparent to Clint Myers, who turns 65 this season and is approaching retirement. Casey Myers is far less loquacious than his younger brother. He also seems uncomfortable in the spotlight.

Can Casey Myers thrive as a head coach? Does he want that?

"Casey is in it for the long term; as long as I’m here, Casey will remain," Clint Myers said. "If I leave, the option would be his, if Auburn wants it, to extend the conversation to him to take over. To me, Casey Myers is the best coach out there. Logic would say that if he wanted him to do it and Auburn wanted it, it would be a continuation of what we’ve done."

Clint Myers remains under contract through the 2020 season and said Thursday that he's planning to honor that commitment.

"That's going to be up to Jay (Jacobs) and what he wants to do," Clint Myers said.

Auburn (31-5) resumes play Friday night at home against Ole Miss.
