AUBURN | Ameer Speed made his first visit to Auburn Wednesday, but it won’t be his last.

The three-star cornerback recruit from Sandalwood in Jacksonville, Fla. already has plans to return.

“It went really good. I enjoyed my time there,” Speed said. “I definitely want to come back. I talked to the coaches and I’m going to try and make it to the season opener against Clemson.”

Speed arrived in Auburn around noon. He was joined on the visit by teammate Brayden Matts, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound safety.

“We took a tour and saw the campus and facilities,” Speed said. “Everything was real nice. I enjoyed it.”

Speed and Matts then worked with Auburn secondary coach Wesley McGriff.

“I enjoyed being coached by him,” Speed said. “I like Coach McGriff. He’s a great coach and I learned a lot from him.”

Speed lists scholarship offers from several schools, including Auburn, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Maryland, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Duke, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Mississippi State, among others.

“I’ve got it narrowed down to a top 16,” Speed said. “Auburn is in there.”

Speed, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 195 pounds, doesn’t have a timetable for making a commitment.

“I’m trying to see all the schools that I can before making a decision,” Speed said.

Rivals ranks Speed the No. 37 cornerback in the 2017 class.
