AUBURN -- The Tigers lost by 20 points at Arkansas last season, which perhaps was the lowest point of a disappointing year.
Those days clearly are in the past.
Auburn, now coached by Terri Williams-Flournoy, used its full-court press to create 13 points off 13 steals and earned a 50-47 win.
The Tigers now are 12-2 this season.
"It's a big win. I'm going to downplay it as much as possible because it's the first game of the SEC," Williams-Flournoy said. "What does this win do for us? It gives us the confidence that we need to go into tough SEC games."
Forward Tyrese Tanner finished with 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Guard/forward Hasina Muhammad added 13 points on 6-of-19 field goals.
Though Auburn shot just 33 percent overall, defensive intensity made up for those misses. Arkansas shot just 28 percent including a 5-of-22 performance from long range.
The Tigers resume play Sunday at Missouri, which opened 11-3 but lost by 31 points at Georgia to open conference play.
