AUBURN | Lafayette quarterback Jatarvious Whitlow is hard to stop on offense. Not many teams have contained him this season, or even come close.

But Auburn believes he could be just as successful, or more, on defense in college.

“I pretty much just play offense unless we play a really good team,” Whitlow said. “But (Auburn DB) Coach (Wesley) McGriff really wants me at safety.”

Whitlow isn’t opposed to the idea.

Despite having passed for 1,962 yards and 26 touchdowns, and rushing for 1,760 yards and 28 scores, Whitlow trusts McGriff’s evaluation. After all, the Tigers are his top team.

“Auburn, Tulane and UAB are my top three,” Whitlow said. “With Auburn, it’s just the chemistry that they have and how they play. It really fits me.”

It also doesn’t hurt that Auburn is 25 miles down Highway 431.

“I’m really close to my mom and we live right up the road,” Whitlow said.

Whitlow visited Auburn on Saturday for the Tigers’ 23-16 win over Vanderbilt. He plans to return again before making a commitment. He claims offers from Auburn, UAB, Tulane, Georgia State and Jacksonville State, and interest from several schools, including Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Troy and Penn State.

“I’ll make my decision in February,” Whitlow said.
