Auburn has picked up a commitment from one of its top quarterback recruits.
Woody Barrett, a dual-threat quarterback from West Orange High in Winter Garden, Fla., announced Wednesday his intentions to sign with Auburn.
Barrett, 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, chose Auburn over Alabama during a ceremony at West Orange High School.
"I'm officially committing to Auburn University," Barrett, dressed in Auburn gear, said. "War Damn Eagle!"
Barrett narrowed his choices to Auburn and Alabama after considering offers from Clemson, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin, among others.
"I just felt like it was a great fit for me," Barrett said. "They've been with me since my ninth grade year. The offense is like ours. I just have a great bond with the coaches, Coach (Rhett) Lashlee, Coach (Gus) Malzahn and (area recruiter) Coach (Scott) Fountain. I feel like it's a great fit."
Barrett is the Tigers' seventh commitment in the 2016 class and third in five days. Rivals100 receiver Elijah Stove and 2017 Rivals100 to Watch five-star offensive tackle Calvin Ashley both committed to Auburn on Saturday.
Barrett didn't attend Auburn's Big Cat event over the weekend. He instead played in his spring game Friday night in front of Lashlee, who attended the game on an evaluation visit. Lashlee and the Tigers' offense were keys to land Barrett's commitment.
So was a former Heisman winner.
"Their offense is the same thing that the coach here pushes me every day in practice," Barrett said. "No-huddle, fast-tempo, Cam Newton. That's who I look up to. I feel we have the same play style. That's another reason why I'm going to Auburn."
Barrett last visited Auburn in March to attend a spring scrimmage. He had an idea when he left that Auburn could be his college choice.
"I got a real good vibe," Barrett said after the visit. "The team bond, I saw how the team connected with each other and how the coaches got along. Everybody had one team goal and it was to win another national championship."
Barrett joins Stove, Central-Phenix City four-star cornerback John Broussard, Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) four-star safety Stephen Davis Jr., Wenonah three-star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, Spanish Fort four-star linebacker Tre Threat and Calhoun (Ga.) three-star tight end Landon Rice in Auburn's 2016 class. Upson-Lee (Thomaston, Ga.) defensive tackle David Marshall de-committed from Auburn on Tuesday.
Barrett, ranked the No. 62 player in Florida, led West Orange to an 11-2 record as a junior in 2014. Barrett compiled 2,371 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns. He completed 86 of 139 pass attempts (61.9 percent) for 1,558 yards and 24 touchdowns, and rushed for 813 yards and nine scores.
