AUBURN | Tobe Umerah didn’t know what to expect when he met with Auburn’s coaches Saturday afternoon, but he left the meeting with a big smile on his face.

“They offered me,” said Umerah, a 2018 defensive end from Stratford Academy in Macon, Ga. “I was very surprised when I got it. I didn't expect to get one but I was very happy and I thanked them and everything.

“They told me they like how I competed and they like how I went fast and that I already have the talent and I just need to continue to be coachable and continue to compete.”

Umerah, 6-foot-2 and 216 pounds, earned the offer following a standout performance at Auburn’s camp Saturday morning. He got a lot of 1-on-1 coaching from Rodney Garner.

“It went very well. I felt like I learned a lot and I just competed and went fast,” Umerah said. “(Garner) was really nice. I feel like he taught me a lot. He coached us hard. He was always pushing us to get better.”

Umerah, who was visiting Auburn for the first time, said his third SEC offer was an important one.

“It meant a lot,” he said. “It was actually one of my top schools I wanted to go to. I'm really excited about that.”

Umerah also has offers from Tennessee, Ole Miss and Duke. He doesn’t have any early favorites and is in no hurry to make a decision.

“I'm just kind of going around visiting these places and see what I like,” he said.

Umerah will camp at Alabama Sunday and Florida State on Wednesday. He plans to return to Auburn for a game or more this fall.
