AUBURN | In just six months on the recruiting trail, Auburn linebacker coach Travis Williams is making a big impression.

He’s already garnered two linebacker commitments for the 2017 class and hosted several top targets this weekend for Big Cat including Monty Rice.

“He’s just like one of us,” said Rice, a standout from James Clemens in Madison, Ala. “He relates to us real well. He’s not that old. He played linebacker undersized so he’s pretty tough, has some dog in him.”

Williams is recruiting Rice as a middle linebacker. He had 135 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss, three interceptions and returned two fumbles for touchdowns as a junior.

“He told me I am a perfect fit,” Rice said.

Rice, 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, has an impressive offer list that includes Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Florida State, Michigan, Kentucky and Louisville.

Rice insists he doesn’t have any leaders but when asked where Auburn stood?

“They’re at the high point of my list.”

Rice also mentioned Florida State, Alabama and Georgia as teams that he has high interest in.

Auburn received a commitment from four-star defensive back Malcolm Askew during Big Cat and Rice definitely took notice.

“It looks like they’re getting a lot of good guys. They got Askew (Saturday). It looks like they’re getting a lot of good guys and they’re going to be back at the top part of the SEC,” Rice said.

Rice said he doesn’t have a timetable for a decision.
