OFFENSE - Best guess with 6 months left

AUBURN - Auburn enters the start of fall practice and the midway point in the recruiting cycle with 12 commitments in its 2017 class.

Essentially the Tigers are half-full at the halfway mark.

Auburn has seven players committed on the offensive side of the ball, including a trio of talented linemen, and is looking to add 4-5 more on offense before the first Wednesday in February.

Which recruits does Auburn have the best chance of adding to the class?

Here is my best guess with six months left.

QUARTERBACK (1)

Auburn secured a commitment from Tray Bishop two days after the quarterback/athlete and several family members visited for the War Damn BBQ in July. Bishop, from Terrell County High in Dawson, Ga., chose the Tigers over in-state Georgia and Florida primarily because Auburn is willing to give him an opportunity to play quarterback. That’s understandable. Bishop can pass and run, and does both extremely well.

BEST GUESS

Could Auburn add another quarterback to the class? The possibility is there, although it could be more likely to come via an off-season transfer than signing a second high school player. So for now, I’ll go with one — Bishop.

RUNNING BACKS (3)

Auburn appears to be full in the backfield after recently adding Rivals100 running back Devan Barrett to a class that already included Octavius Matthews and Alaric Williams.

BEST GUESS

Nothing much left for Auburn to do except hold on to the three it has committed. No reason to think it won’t.

TIGHT END (1)

Auburn continues to look for a tight end in the class after IMG Academy’s Tre’ McKitty chose Oregon at The Opening in July. But McKitty's recruitment isn't over. He'll visit Auburn in the fall, and the Tigers will have a chance to change his mind. There are others high on the board, including Kurt Rafdal from Indiana. Rafdal visited Auburn in July and plans to return in the fall. Nebraska, however, appears to be high on his list, as do the in-state Hoosiers.

BEST GUESS

McKitty. Auburn finished a close second to the Ducks and continues to stay in contact with McKitty. Oregon is far from home, which could play to the Tigers’ advantage when it’s time to put pen to paper.

WIDE RECEIVERS (2-3)

Auburn received a commitment from junior college wideout Brandon Martin in July, only to lose it four days later. Martin, however, visited Auburn again two weeks later and continues to have the Tigers high on his list, if not at the top of it. He’s a big receiver, a big target, and Auburn is looking for one in this class. Jeremiah Holloman is another big receiver target, as is his teammate at Newton, Justin Marshall.

Auburn also is looking to add a traditional slot receiver in the mold of Henry Ruggs, Kadarius Toney and JaTarvious Whitlow. Ruggs once was believed to be closing in on a commitment to Alabama, but the Tide may not be in the market for another slot after Jerry Jeudy jumped on board in late July. Whitlow, from nearby Lafayette, is one to keep an eye on. He visited for the barbecue and will return for an official visit. Toney, however, seems set on Florida with the Gators offering him a chance to compete at quarterback, something Auburn has not mentioned to him.
