The No. 7 running back in the 2018 class will sign with Auburn.

Asa Martin, a four-star recruit from Austin in Decatur, committed to Auburn over his other three finalists: Alabama, Clemson and Florida.

Martin announced his decision Thursday morning in front of a large crowd gathered inside the Austin High School auditorium.

"I will be attending the University of Auburn," Martin announced at the podium. "I decided to go with my heart."

Martin has visited Auburn several times, including a multi-day visit in July for the Tigers Cookout. He has strong bonds with several of Auburn’s coaches, most notably running backs coach Tim Horton, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and head coach Gus Malzahn.

Martin should fit into Lindsey’s scheme at Auburn. He is a threat both running and catching the ball out of the backfield. Last season at IMG Academy in Florida, Martin averaged 7.6 yards per carry and had 17 receptions for 235 yards. As a sophomore at Austin, Martin rushed for 1,374 yards and 12 touchdowns helping lead Austin to the 6A state semifinals.

Martin is the Tigers’ 13th commitment in the 2018 class, eight of whom are ranked four-star recruits by Rivals.com.

Martin, who is ranked the No. 2 overall recruit in Alabama behind Central-Phenix City wide receiver Justyn Ross, gives Auburn commitments from five of the state’s top prospects. The Tigers also have commitments from Hoover wide receiver Shedrick Jackson, Decatur defensive back Josh Marsh, Brooks offensive lineman Kameron Stutts and Cordova athlete Kolbi Fuqua.

Martin is the second running back to commit to Auburn, joining all-purpose back Shaun Shivers, a four-star recruit from Hollywood, Fla.

Rivals ranks Martin, who stands six feet tall and weighs 195 pounds, No. 128 in the Rivals250.
