Mize, Lipscomb combine on 2-hit shutout

AUBURN | Pitching and defense got it done for Auburn again.

Casey Mize and Cole Lipscomb combined for a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over George Washington in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Auburn, which shutout the Colonials in a 9-0 win Friday, improves to 2-0 on the season.

Mize (1-0) started and held GW to two hits in 5.0 innings. The sophomore struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.

Lipscomb earned his second-career save holding GW without a hit and striking out four over the final 4.0 innings.

Auburn didn’t commit an error for a second-straight game and made several big plays in the infield. Third baseman Josh Anthony made two diving stops going to his left and shortstop Luke Jarvis showed his range in the ninth making a nice play on a ground ball up the middle.

The Tigers also got some timely hitting in the fifth, scoring two runs with two outs on an RBI-single by Blake Logan, an error by GW shortstop Nate Fassnascht, and an RBI-single by Jarvis.

Daniel Robert had two of Auburn’s six hits.

Game two of the doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. CT. The series will conclude Sunday at noon. Both games will be available for streaming on SECN+ and Watch ESPN.

GAME NOTES

** Auburn’s pitching staff has allowed six singles, one double and no runs in 18.0 innings to start this season. It’s the first time the Tigers have started the season with back-to-back shutouts since 1928.

** Robert is now batting .750 (6-of-8) in Auburn’s first two games after starting last season 2-of-17.

** Auburn’s hasn’t committed an error in its first two games after committing an SEC-worst 85 errors last season.
