Auburn's persistence and its hiring of both Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson made Ryan Davis' decision easier than he expected.
The Tigers would have been a finalist with or without Muschamp and Robinson, but they wouldn't have been his final choice. That would have been the Gators, where the pair of coaches came.
Davis visited both Auburn and Florida in consecutive weekends in January before ultimately choosing the Tigers on Signing Day.
Here's the Signee Profile on Davis:
WHEN DID AUBURN FIRST BECOME A SERIOUS OPTION FOR YOU? Auburn recruited me earlier, but they didn't offer then because they were filled up at the position. Then things changed and a spot opened up and they came back around and I was one of the players they came back around to. I listened for a while and then they ended up offering. Once they offered, I started doing more research, looking back to when Cam (Newton) was there. Me and my dad really looked into the offense and started talking to the coaches more and built great relationships.
WHICH COACHES PLAYED PIVOTAL ROLES IN YOUR RECRUITMENT? Coach (Dameyune) Craig, I've known him since I was going to camp at Florida State so I had built a great bond with him. Then Coach Muschamp got the job and then Coach T-Rob and I already had great relationships with those two, too.
WOULD YOU HAVE TAKEN AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO AUBURN HAD MUSCHAMP/ROBINSON NOT BEEN HIRED? I was going to take an official visit to Auburn whether Coach T-Rob got a job there or not. The offense just fit me so well. I began looking into what kind of place Auburn, Ala. is because I'd been out of state, but not to Alabama. I wanted to see the environment, the coaches and everything and what I could be getting myself into.
Coach Muschamp and T-Rob being there definitely helped with familiarity and trust. The more I looked into Auburn, the more I liked. With Coach T-Rob there, that was a bonus because I was a lot more comfortable. I knew that even though they are on the defensive side, Coach T-Rob and Coach Muschamp are still going to look out for me. And with Coach Craig knowing me since I was 12-13 years old, I knew he was going to look out for me, too. The same goes for Coach (Rhett) Lashlee and definitely Coach (Gus) Malzahn. Me and Coach Malzahn have a great relationship.
WHAT WAS THE MAIN REASON YOU CHOSE AUBURN? I loved it there and I knew the type of offense they ran fit me more than any of the other schools, specifically because they get their best players in space. It fits my playing style, the route combinations and the up-tempo offense that I'm already very familiar with. I feel like I can be successful in that offense.
Everything just came together for me. All of the coaches I trusted the most came together at the school with the offense that fits me best. In a weird way, looking back on it, it was meant to be for me to attend Auburn.
HAD MUSCHAMP REMAINED HEAD COACH AT FLORIDA, WOULD THAT HAVE CHANGED THINGS? You never know what would have happened, but I think there's a great possibility that I would have signed with Florida. I was leaning to Florida when Muschamp was there.
WHEN DID YOU INFORM AUBURN OF YOUR COMMITMENT? I told Coach Malzahn two days before Signing Day that I was going to sign there. He was excited, but said he wasn't going to tell anyone.
YOU TOOK AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO FLORIDA AFTER AUBURN. DID THE GATORS MAKE A MOVE DURING THE VISIT? They did. They really did. I love the University of Florida. I love everything about it, but with the new coaching staff I just felt like I needed more time with them. I didn't really know them and I didn't feel like they knew me. I just wasn't going to get myself into a situation like that. I didn't want to gamble on the next 3-4 years of my life on whether or not I liked the staff and the offense.
WAS THERE A RECRUIT YOU WERE SURPRISED THAT SIGNED/DIDN'T SIGN WITH AUBURN? I guess if anyone it would have been Martez Ivey. I thought he might come because of Chandler Cox, but he ended up doing his own thing.
WHAT IS THE 2015 CLASS CAPABLE OF AT AUBURN? I think this class will be a memorable one. We are going to try and be the best class to ever come through Auburn. We have to be the best in practice, the best in the classroom and the best on the field, and I feel like we can be. We're going to do special things at Auburn.
WHEN WILL YOU ARRIVE IN AUBURN? I'll be there Sunday (May 24) and I'll be rooming with Byron (Cowart).
