IMPACT ANALYSIS: McGriff an intriguing, versatile addition
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Leon (Fla.) athlete D'Anfernee McGriff committed to Auburn over Florida State during a ceremony at his high school on Tuesday afternoon.
McGriff holds offers from Auburn, Florida State, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and many more.
Florida State led for McGriff, who has Florida State fans within his family, until a visit to Auburn at the end of March. McGriff left the visit naming Auburn his leader, in front of Florida State. McGriff returned to Auburn this past Saturday for the Tigers' spring A-Day game, that visit sealed the deal.
"Why Auburn? It's an amazing place. Every time I went it felt like home. Amazing atmosphere, great relationship with the coaches, I just love it," McGriff told AuburnSports.com on Tuesday.
"This past weekend at A-day, it was amazing. The fans were awesome. It put icing on the cake. I returned home and talked to my parents on Sunday and Monday, then on Monday afternoon, I decided I was going to make my decision on Tuesday.
"The Auburn atmosphere and the relationships just felt like home. It was unique. The whole town shut down for the spring game, that's an amazing thing. Those are things that stood out as to why Auburn."
McGriff faced the tough decision to move away from home by picking Auburn over hometown Florida State.
"It wasn't hard to ogo away from home. Florida State is an amazing program and I appreciate them, I just felt Auburn was the better place for me," McGriff said. McGriff plans to take all five official visits next fall, but feels "comfortable" in his decision.
McGriff, 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, was recruited to Auburn by Auburn co-offensive coordinator/receivers coach Dameyune Craig.
"From day one, we've had a close relationship and he shows love. He stays true to his word," McGriff said.
McGriff is an athlete slated to play multiple positions for Auburn, including slot receiver, outside receiver and wildcat quarterback. McGriff's role will be similar to how Auburn uses junior wideout Ricardo Louis.
"They're thinking Louis, inside and outside, wildcat, reverses, all the things that are set for my skills," said McGriff. "I do all that in high school and I'm good at it. My skills are getting vertical, make one move and get up field.
"That's what I loved about Saturday in Auburn. Every skill player on offense for Auburn got the ball all over the place. Everyone was getting the ball, that stood out to me."
McGriff is Auburn's 10th commitment of the 2015 class and fourth commitment in the last four days.
Sprayberry (Ga.) offensive tackle Bailey Sharp and Jacksonville (Fla.) Rivals250 safety Ben Edwards committed on Saturday, and Creekside (Ga.) offensive guard Marquel Harrell committed on Monday. Mill Creek (Ga.) Rivals250 offensive guard Kaleb Kim could be commitment number five in six days when he announces between Auburn and Georgia on Thursday.
